Mr. Potato Head Is Going Gender Neutral And Bigots Are Losing Their Minds

Hasbro drops the ‘Mister’ in Mr. Potato Head and conservative trolls are mad that the toy is gender neutral now

Mr. Potato Head and the potato family of toys is getting a gender-neutral rebrand. For as long as Potato Heads have been a thing, there’s always been a Mr. and a Mrs. Potato Head, but starting this year, there will only be “Potato Head,” a gender-neutral toy giving kids the freedom to express their own ideas about gender and gender expression.

This is a cool expansion of the Potato Head universe, freeing itself from the rigid confines of gender and allowing kids to imagine a world in which the mommy Potato Head wears pants or a potato family includes two dads, which naturally means that conservatives are upset about it.

Le sigh.

The new toy will simply be called “Potato Head,” so your kids can attach whatever noses and mustaches and toupees or ponytails and pants or skirts they want.

“The sweet spot for the toy is two to three years old,” Kimberly Boyd, an SVP and GM at Hasbro told Fast Company. “Kids like dressing up the toy, then playing out scenarios from their life. This often takes the form of creating little potato families, because they’re learning what it means to be in a family.”

Hasbro

Hasbro says the gender-neutral Potato Heads allow kids to dress up their toys to their liking and design their own Potato Head family structures outside the previously heteronormative Mr. and Mrs. and a baby Potato Head nuclear family. Now kids can create two-dad or two-mom or single potato households and dress their parent potatoes however they like, because who says mommy Potato Head has to wear a giant bow and earrings all the time?

“Culture has evolved,” Boyd says. “Kids want to be able to represent their own experiences. The way the brand currently exists — with the “Mr.” and “Mrs.” — is limiting when it comes to both gender identity and family structure.”

The AP reports that the changes will appear on Potato Head boxes later this year and not surprisingly, the conservative trolls are freaking out.

Imagine thinking in the middle of a global pandemic: ‘What’s really important is dropping the ‘Mr’ from Mr Potato Head & making him gender-neutral in case we upset a few wokies.’

So Mr. Potato Head is now going to be gender neutral? I hate it here. pic.twitter.com/D15jyp5d2a

Some are so mad that they don’t even know who to be mad at. Like this guy, who is apparently going to boycott Pixar over the decision.

I won’t be watching Toy Story anymore. Absolutely ridiculous! Pixar should be ashamed.

Ben Shapiro seems to be having a total brain malfunction over the news and imagine spiraling out over the news about a kid’s toy?

Ben Shapiro is throwing a fit because Mr. Potato Head is now a gender neutral children’s toy. What an extremely sad loser. pic.twitter.com/Ov5cW6JFDs

One guy decided that the Potato Head news is the final straw in the culture war and that red states have to secede from the nation now.

It’s time for Republican states to secede.

Another called the toy news “mental manipulation.”

This is why i limit any time spent on social media now. The forcing of social change and mental manipulation is thick….

I do not want to be a part of that world.

Exhaustive conservative trolls aside, the new Potato Head toys seem pretty cool and if we’re being really real, potatoes never had genders anyway, so like…can everyone calm down, please? Great.
